The Stanza 5 speed is not the same as the L20SSS 5 speed. Its a shorter box.
 
The Stanza fits into the 1600 without tailshaft and tunnel mods.  But it does need to have the cross member altered.
 
Best way I have found to do this modification is to cut the original cross member into 3 sections, (2 sides and the middle, note where the exhaust runs and cut inside this on the LHS). I cut the crossmember into three using a cutting disc. Bolt the outer sections to the body and the inner section to the gearbox in situ in the car. This allows you to insert a piece of 1.6mm steel plate into each cut between the sections. Tack it together, then remove the crossmember and fully weld it.  Trim the inserted 1.6mm plates and welds with a grinder, paint it all black and bolt it in. It will look original equipment.

any one able to whisper the right combo to get the Stanza 5sp into the early 1600's?
 
Im trying to bolt the x-member up and she aint want to go no matter which way around it is.  Ive been told by a mate who did the same thing (L20 SSS 5sp) that two holes lined and he drilled the other two and put plates on the inside of the car, but buggered if i can get one pair of holes lined up!
 
Ive got the std L16 x-member and another one that is pretty chunky, not sure where its from,
 
This same combo bolted up to the last 1600 that this motor was in but it doesnt want to fit!!
 
Please help! Im getting quite pissed off to say the least!!
