paintwork query

Howdy Listers.   The coming Christmas holidays im planning on doing a bit of prepwork to my car, namely sanding off all the rust, bogging up one or two dented spots, and priming over it.   Pretty much I want to know if I can apply the primer using a brush or something because its only a temporary measure and it would save the cost of hiring the spray gear for just a really small job.
