This is a pretty lively topic! =)

It honestly isn't that bad health wise, directly, make sure its well
ventilated and don't go suck it in directly.

It is only majorly harmful when it becomes a phosgene (like a nerve gas),
this is when it becomes in contact with a flame (highly unlikely in an open,
well ventilated area), many frigees have to put up with this stuff regularly
when doing compressor changes and pipe work, it stings the eyes and tastes
like nothing else, very horrid!

If it is in a liquid form, it can cause frost bite, to stop this do as Mark
said and let it out slowly, this will give it time to boil off into a
vapour.

Most refrigerants are ozone depleting and illegal to release, including
R134a although R12 is 10 times worse!

Legally, you must get someone to recovery it and have it destroyed,
personally not worth the hassle and $$$.

It does however put a hole up there in the sky and is the major contributor
to making it (CFC's), which will lead to killing us all off if we don't stop
soon.

So, Its up to you matey!

Cheers,

Regards,
Jon Ovington
