Still works a treat to Richard, I did that in '98 and the linkages are still tight as a ...working well anyway.

Those characteristics are normal for Stanza SSS 5 speed (dogleg) boxes.  The earlier Datsun 4 speeds on 1600;s and 180B;s had a poorer design for the gear shift which when worn, gave a long throw across the neutral gate and require a bit of engineering to fix.  Sloppy shifters in the 5 speed boxes are almost always fixed by replacing the nylon bushes around the pin that holds the gear stick in.  Terry had a good tip to fix these cheaply.  Use the 12mm joiners for plastic garden watering systems.

Thanks guys,
Are the shift patterns different between the Stanza boxes? I was told mine was a dogleg, it has the reverse across to the left and up, but i`m 99% sure 5th is an over drive. I know for sure that this `box is "quicker" through the gears than the standard 1600 4speed. Are there any part numbers cast into the `box that can identify what is is? and where can i find them?
When changing through the gears, 2-3-4-5, the gear stick is relatively close together (almost straight up an down), not much side movement needed compared to a standard 4 speed, my gear stick has no slop in it at all, is this normal?

 Sorry for rambling,

  Kris.

The 1:1 dogbox is an Option box and not your stock Stanza 5 spd that you'll find at the wreckers or in the Trading Post for $100 - 200.

The Stanza PA10 box comes in 2 ratio sets, and they can handle up to 150 hp all day - a decent torquey L20B seems to get them excited.

The Stanza 5 sp is different in its ratios.  although it is 5 sp the 5th gear is a 1:1 ratio where as most 5 sp's have 4th gear as 1:1 and then 5th as an overdrive of about 0.8x:1

People say that they arent that strong, but ive given mine a hiding and its never complained, and why would you make a weak close ratio box? with a differnet shift pattern set up for quick 2--> 3 shifts? ideal for the dirt or an autokhana with the right diff?

It must shift easily between gears and have no noise at all. They are nothing special ratio wise just a different shift pattern.

Hi All,
Can anyone please tell me the good/bad signs of a Stanza 5 speed dogleg `box. Also is this box a "closer ratio" type box?

  Thanks,
            Kris.
