The extra lead coming off the heavy gauge +ve lead would be for the fusible link (big fuse) and the black one coming of the -ve lead is a secondary earth. The heavy gauge lead (+ve) is only used to supply current to the starter, the general power for the vehicle is supplied via the much smaller lead.
