Depends on the age of the car, etc. Pre pollution car or post 1976.

Some RTA's will allow you to go for a FREE pollution examination. You gotta book in a 
week or two in advance, They throw your car on a dyno with a funnel over the exhaust 
pipe and they measure all sorts of things and give you a report telling you about how 
clean your car is compared to average for that year and ADR spec.

If your tuning is just slightly on the lean side you will usually get a very very good 
report and then you can carry the report around in the car, take it to an engineer or 
whatever. If when you go for a pink slip and they pull you up on it, you can hand them 
the RTA pollution test report and say it's all sweet and nice.

Tip. Tune your car a tad leaner just before your test, then set it back to normal 
after. Don't go too lean, otherwise you will go higher on other gas levels and lower 
on the bad gases, but rich will go high on the bad gas and low on the type of gas they 
don't care about.
