Ahhh, he knows how to take a look...

He just wants an idea of how much the engine is breathing, if his is
normal.

You only want a little bit, too much is due to engine wear, rings ect.

Sounds like you have a bit of a cooling sys problem, you should have
some kind of pressure in there even with a slightly warm engine, at 100c
you should be getting serious pressure with burns to match. =)

First things I would do, replace/repair the gauge and sender and get a
new cap.
