Both are good, but for everyday probably a voltmeter as you can see whether the alternator's working. It's a good warning to get it fixed before you turn the key and nothing happens! In my opinion an ampmeter is only usefull when actually diagnosing a problem, e.g. determining if something is drawing power - and how much.
