Many of the modern viruses (viri?) that do the rounds dont require you to open the attachment, all they require is that your computer receives it - assuming you are running the normal windows/outlook/exchange setup. If you want to shield yourself from email viruses but dont want to switch to a unix system, use a client like The Bat!, it is a first rate client, and because not many people use it, security flaws in it never get targeted.
