Good
advise Kris.
Ppl,
when you use one of those little Bosch relays (especially the plastic covered
ones) for whatever purpose and you love your Datto, always make sure you have
the primary fuse i.e. the largest capacity one in the line from the power source
to Pin 30. If you don't fuse the primary power wire and you somehow get a dead
short on that wire, the coil in the relay turns into a incendiary i.e. the
relay will burn like a beauty. If you've got the thing stuck under the dash
somewhere out of the way then you can imagine what happens. You can by all
means use another smaller capacity fuse to the device being powered from Pin 87
and even in the sensing or switch wire to Pin 86 (lighting improvements
are very often wired like this on a 1600, the smaller capacity fuses are
actually the ones in the fuse box.)
For the VL HP pump, we use a 20 amp in the power line to Pin 30
and as the relay is usually mounted in the boot we use a 15
Amp fuses fairly close to the relay in the line from Pin 87 to
the pump and also a 7.5 amp fuse in the sense line to Pin 86 normally close to
the output from the ECU as this wire travels all the way through the interior
loom - you don't want a dead short anywhere near your ECU. Also I recommend that
if you use inline fuse holders around fuel and battery vapours you get
bakelite ones in preference to metal ones, and never use those low
cost plastic ones designed for 2 amp radio fuses, I've come across these things
being used for high amp devices way too often.
regards
Terry
Put the fuse as close as possible to were you are
taking the power from. That way, the whole circuit is protected.
If you put it anywhere else, say after the relay
and get a short between the power sorce and relay, the fuse won`t blow and you
may end up with a fire.

yeah thanks mark, I just asked before even
thinking it through. When I sat down and had a 2 minute think about
what the relay has to do it was just common sense how to hook it up :( ....
It was like one of those moment where the instructions for something are
right under your nose and you're sitting there asking someone for the
answer
Dave
PS. should I put the fuse between power and the
relay, or the relay and the fuel pump? or doesn't it matter

hi, you can use any of those square black
bosch relays.
they have a connection diagram on the
actual relay itself..
or the guy at the auto shop should help
you.
run some decent size wire as
well..
and a fuse.

guys I'm rigging up a VL Turbo external
pump under the car
can someone tell me what relay I have to
use and a quick run down of how to wire up the relay (what each pin goes
to)
