I have just completed log booking two dedicated race cars and thought this topic may be of interest to anyone that is thinking of doing it. To compete at higher levels of motor sport your car must be log booked
For a registered car The 1977 Datsun Stanza was purchased as a road registered but not CAMS log booked rally car. It was bought with a full Roll cage (ROP Roll Over Protection) and suitable for most forms of Rally or racing, It is a Production car containing nothing built after 1977 and nothing that could not have been fitted in a Datsun of that Age. Brakes, gearbox and suspension are permitted certain freedoms. You firstly call CAMS and ask for a log book if the car is already registered, simple forms are filled in with the only complex form being accreditation of ROP. You must have a 2S or higher cams license and be a member of a CAMS car club. The fee for a log book is $63.00. The certification of ROP requires someone to take ownership of the cage and certify that it is built to CAMS requirements. Thickness, strength etc are all taken into account and a drawing of the cage and supports is needed. Generally certification should only be done by an engineer or the actual manufacturer of the cage. For an unregistered car The 1991 GtiR has no compliance and is imported with race or rally approval only. These cars are commonly available for about half the price of a fully complianced car. The log book is still completed the same way. The car at this stage has no ROP and is usable as a club car. IE Supersprints, motorkhana, Grand Prix Rally. (Just about anything that you only need a level 2 license for) When the log book arrives (approx 14 days) you take the car to a dual purpose Blue slip provider such as MRT who fills in the rest of the forms and provides you with a completed blue slip. CTP and REGO are still needed and cost the same as if the car is fully registered. The car becomes a dedicated rally vehicle (even if used for circuit racing). This allows the vehicle on public roads only to go to and from and during CAMS sanctioned events and to and from mechanical repairers. I hope this helps anyone wanting to log book a car.
