Subject: NEED BRAKE HELP FOR MY NEW
FJ!!!
Morning List,
I have just got my FJ1600 on the road and the brakes suck. The brakes are
a 180B booster, 3/4 inch master cylinder, recoconditioned Commodore
calipers with verada discs, standard rear end with new wheel cylinders. It has
the rear line going straight from the MC to a proportioning valve then to the
rear brakes. The front line seperates at a junction and goes to the front
brakes. The standard junction box is no longer there. The brakes have been
like this when the car had a L series and the brakes were unreal.
The brake pedal is not firm and only engages the brakes when it is about
two thirds of the way down. We removed the master cylinder and inspected it,
and it is fine. So the MC is good, the calipers are new, as are the wheel
cylinders. What is going on? The only thing I can think of is that I
need a larger master cylinder (maybe 7/8) to push that fluid around the
vehicle because the brake lines are longer to accomadate the fitting of the
FJ.
The brake lines were made out of copper and go around under the radiator
to the left caliper instead of around the back of the engine bay like in a
standard 1600. Could these copper brake lines be flexing or expanding? Am I
better of with 'bundy tubing'?
Any advice appreciated as I keep spending money on the incorrect
diagnosis!!!
Check Ya,
Damo.
