Yeah spot on, most people just go for a good flowing, readily available
pump from a standard efi vehicle.

VL would be the ideal one that I first think of.

You dont need a surge tank, that is only nescesary for EFI to get rid of
air bubbles/surges in the fuel supply, the float bowl in a carby does
that job. Fuel pumps like carters/holleys I would avoid, waaayy to noisy
(but big flow capabilities).
