Richard,

Some simple steps. When you are ready to start on the chain, loosen the 19mm bolt at the front of the cam first. Then wind the engine over by hand until number 1 is at TDC (look at the timing marks on the crank pulley and set it to zero). You can tell which is number 1 as the two front cam lobes will be pointing up. If you look through the cam gear, you will see a little V in the gear where it meets the thrust plate on the front cam tower. There is a corresponding mark on the thrust plate which should line up (it never does exactly!). Once you are at this step, you will need to push a wedge down the cam chain to stop the tensioner jumping out. After that, undo the cam gear bolt and carefully take the gear off. Make sure you have undone the two 6mm bolts at the front of the head before you try and take the head off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Its easy (especially after you have done a couple of hundred) J Dont worry about the marks on the chain, if there are any, its only the relationship of the crank and cam you have to worry about.

Subject: timing chain removal

Hi guys,

another newbie question, Im trying to remove the head on my l20b, all the manuals say before removing it line up the timing mark on the chain with the 1 2 or 3 on the camsaft sproket. I cant find the mark on the chain. where should I be looking? did some chains not have a mark?

thanks

Richard
