thanx for the info. I have two of these boxes that my brother has given to me and he has now fitted an rb30 to his 260z. One of the engines was rebuilt when the car he bought was restored so I assume the box is in good condition.
I am talking about fittting the 260z to a datsun 1600.
so I assume I need to do the folloiwng:
1) enlarge trans hole by about 60mm?
2) either drill new holes for the trans mount or more perferably cut and weld the 260z mount and stock mount together after cutting them so that it bolts up to the floor in stock locations.
3) shorten tailshaft.
 
I have done the first thing myself when I fitted an sr20det in my other 1600 so I am happy with what is required there.
The second and third and not too hard. My brother cut and combined two trans mounts when he fitted his rb30. I will use the same welder.

The general consensus seems to be that it is worth doing this conversion and that the 260z is the best stock box for this engine???
 
does this sound right?

Errol is as usual correct and very thorough in his advice.  However, note he doesnt totally discount the Z box installation.
 
If you know the box is good, it is a fairly easy install in your Stanza.  It b! olts up to the  L20B clutch and all.  You could also use the z flywheel and clutch on the L20 as they both have a 6 bolt crank.  This gives you a larger dia. clutch and ensures you have the correct length throwout bearing spiggot installed.  As Errol says, you need to elongate the gearshift hole in the tunnel (about 60mm - be careful not to severe the rear brke line running up the tunnel). You will have to fabricate a new gearbox cross member - usually done by welding  the Z crossmember centre section between the outer ends of the Stanza cross member.
 
You will need to shorten the tail shaft by approx 120mm - measure the difference in the length of the two boxes to get an accuraTE MEASURE.  THIS IS easily done by hacksawing around the tailshaft behind the weld that joins the tailshaft to the front yoke.  Cut in just enough to bre! ak through the tailshaft tube.  The tube and yoke can be then separated.  You will see there is a bit of extended yoke beyond the weld to guide you in machining the weld off the yoke, turning it down to the inner diameter of the the tailshaft tube.
 
Cut the tailshaft to length and reweld it to the yoke, ensuring its square.  This isnt hard as the yoke extends well into the tailshaft tube.

oh well thanx anyway erroll. One of the engine packges was rebuilt only a few years ago. It is just my brother has put an rb30 in his 260z and no longer needs the engine, box etc. Plus he has another package from another zed. Seems a shame to waste them.

Boxes that are the same as stock length, are stanza and MR30 skyline (stumpy skyline box). These boxes fit without butchering. All the longer boxes have to have the floorpan cut for the gear lever.
 
I have just had a hybrid box made up for my 1600, using a stumpy skyline casing and output shaft and fitting the 260Z gear set into the stumpy case.
Parts were all crack tested and it took 3 X 260Z boxes to get all good parts. Most gears or coupling sleeves are shot through 30 years of abuse.

Hey all
 
I was after some advice with regards to putting a 260z gearbox into a! 1600. I have two complete 260z engines sitting in the garage and I thought I might replace my clanky stanza box with one of these gearboxes. The engine is a l20b.
 
My questions are:
Does the box bolt up to the l20b or do I need to play around with bellhousings? If so pls ellaborate.
Do I have to play around with gearbox mount? If so what do I need to do? Just use the 260z mount or fabricate?
How about gearbox hole? Any cutting?
