I think the latest version does work with earlier versions, I know I did a lazy thing for a while where I used "gets" everywhere, but that's fixed now. On the other hand, there are many other good reasons not to run an older version than 1.2.5. :-)
Also, there's a 1.2.6 win32 version up at http://code.jellycan.com/memcached/, butI haven't tested it myself yet.
