I was doing around 500 on a page and that made a significant impact. I've got a couple pages that were doing somewhere north of 3,000. However, a single request for 3,000 isn't a big deal. It was impractical to do this in the app we were shipping in the timeline I had, however many of our cache lookups were for the same object, so I mixed a first-level per-thread cache into our API that's invalidated on every request. It was a quick hack, but made things much nicer.
