If you want to change the affinity of a particular thread, you have to use the pseudo-process id of the thread.

Thanks, Jaime! That did the trick. Although I notice that the parent thread spends a ton of time handling interrupts, so the load doesn't balance perfectly. But it seems better than having all threads on one core.
You can also change the affinity of interrupt processing in /proc/irq/*/smp_affinity
