You might try grabbing the EPEL version of 1.2.8  It built and tested
without problems:

updated the EPEL build to 1.4.4 yet, and probably won't get to it for while
(I was waiting for 1.4.5 before doing a rebuild...)  Also, is this a 64 bit
PPC machine?  That might account for the issues you're facing..
