Since memory is a shared resource, it's possible that setting up a memcached server on a system that otherwise had stuff in memory would make those other memory pages move to and from swap. This could even be filesystem caching. You don't say if there are other things on that other box or if you have swap enabled. That said, if it's IO you're noticing on the bill, it's probably not swap. Hope that helps, Matt
