memcached isn't deadlocked at this point, as a small number of connections 
seem to connect OK.
 
Since I haven't found a way to reduce the occurrence of problem, I switched 
from using memcached to APC's user cache since I don't need the distributed 
cache aspect.  APC has been reliable for me thus far.
 
It's probably just something strange with the hardware/OS/software 
combination I'm using since the problem doesn't seem widespread.  Once I 
upgrade hardware I might try again (memcached had been working nearly 
flawlessly in past 8 years of projects on older hardware).
