Thanks for your reply and for following trough the issue on github!
I was connecting with a binary connection, however I didn't setup any sasl
auth just yet and I was connecting without username/password.
I'll close this issue and if I get some time I'll try to setup sasl on my
mac (or get everything working on a linux vm..)
