I am all for this ideas well. At the hackathon we will be providing
such access for developers to check-in code just so we have things
saved and not lost. +1 for Git or Mercurial.

This is a good idea... Although if it were centrally git this would
be less of a big deal. Repos could exist anywhere and maintaining
patches would just be a matter of giving out your url. It also has
those fancy extensions for sending patch series in for review :)
