You'd use something that stores on disk for that, like BerkeleyDB. Also, the two ideas are kind of at odds. You typically buy a solid state disk instead of a ton of RAM because you can't afford to lose your data if the power goes out. You use memcached for things where you don't mind losing data. - Perrin
