Mendele Personal Notices & Announcements Jan. 3, 2011
To minimize wear and tear on the untershames, three requests: 1. Send time-sensitive notices well in advance. 2. Send material as plain text: no HTML, other coding, or attachments;and write MENDELE PERSONALS in the subject line. 3. Correspond directly with the person who or organization which has posted the notice, *not* with your ever-beleaguered untershames. ________________________________________________________________ Date: Mon, 20 Dec 2010 18:14:18 +0200 From: Einat Amitay <[email protected]> Subject: early letters of Fania Bergstein and her family in need of translation Shalom, A friend advised me to write to the Mendele mailinglist and maybe you all could help. My name is Einat and I'm an avid collector and researcher of culture of kibbutz' children. Last week, during an interview with the nephew of Fania Bergstein who lives in kibbutz Beit HaShita, I discovered over 150 letters of Fania Bergstein and her family in a shoebox. The letters were not known to researchers or people from outside the family. Following this discovery I've decided to scan ALL the letters in order to upload them to the web for all to see and explore. The letters are in Yiddish (mostly), Polish, Russian, Hebrew and English. I am now trying to find volunteers who can help me translate the letters into searchable Hebrew - and make them freely available for research and exploration. The site - where the letters, some information about the project and some details about the Bergstein family can be found is here: http://nigunim-project.blogspot.com/ The site is in Hebrew and so far I have uploaded 100 letters and postcards and I intend to upload all of them by the end of this week. You are all very welcome to help translate and decipher these amazing pieces of history. Thanks, Einat ________________________________________________________________ Please do not use the "reply" key when writing to Mendele.
