Correspond directly with the person who or organization which has posted the notice, *not* with your ever-beleaguered untershames. ________________________________________________________________ Date: Tue, 4 Jan 2011 15:02:07 -0500 From: David Mandelbaum <[email protected]> Subject: "Shylock Escapes Broadway"-New York, Jan. 13 SHYLOCK ESCAPES BROADWAY On January 13th the notorious Hebrew and protzentnik (moneylender) of Venice, heads downtown to a safehouse on 16th street, where with the help of New Yiddish Rep, The Congress for Jewish Culture, The Yiddish National Theater (not to be confused with The National Yiddish Theater-Folksbiene), CYCO, and his host YIVO, he will enact his version of the famous story associated with his person in the charming jargon of his tribe. Present to abet him in this undertaking will be an all star cast of Yiddish actors. You are invited to witness this moving courtroom drama. Admission is free. Since proceedings will take place in Yiddish, supertitles will be provided for the benefit of the general public. Seats in court are limited and the streets of Venice are narrow, so reservations are recommended. There will be a brief introduction by Yiddish theater historian Nahma Sandrow. Next to Moses, arguably the best known Jewish character in World literature. In the 400 odd years since his creation he has worn many faces. Lately he looks a little like Al Pacino. But 110 years ago at a lower east side theater he looked exactly like Jacob Adler, and he spoke Yiddish. Adler, the iconoclastic "eagle" of the Yiddish stage threw out the romantic sub-plot, keeping only enough of it to justify the story line, and placed his enormous presence front and center as Shylock. We will be presenting his cut of the play and the wonderful translation by Yiddish poet Joseph Bovshover. I hope to see some of you there.
