Send material as plain text: no HTML, other coding, or attachments;and write MENDELE PERSONALS in the subject line. 3. Correspond directly with the person who or organization which has posted the notice, *not* with your ever-beleaguered untershames. _________________________________________________________________________________ Date: Fri, 6 May 2011 21:39:19 +0100 From: Geraldine Auerbach <[email protected]> Subject: Yiddish Language and Song courses in London Yiddish Language and Yiddish Song Summer Schools 2011 JMI runs two separate (but concurrent) one-week courses - one for Yiddish language students and one for singers. Sunday 14 - Friday 19 August 2011 The language course is for beginners to advanced students. We usually have students of various backgrounds and from about the age of 18 to 90 attending. The mix of ages is very special - those who know Yiddish from before mixing with those coming to it fresh, is very productive. The song course is for serious singers who want to embrace the vast and touching Yiddish song repertoire. The courses take place at the Vernon Square Campus of SOAS University of London Penton Rise, London WC1X 9EW More details on Website www.jmi.org.uk The courses start with registration on Sunday morning 14 August (at 10.30am for those that want to brush up on the alef beys - the letters in which Yiddish is written) and at 11.30am for all others. >From Monday to Friday classes are from 9.30 in the morning till 6.30pm. There are Yiddish language sessions for all each morning in four levels. After lunch there is a 'learning Yiddish through song' session for everyone - after which, singers have masterclasses and sessions on interpretation pronunciation etc while the language students have conversation sessions, Yiddish films and even some drama if they want it, as well as optional extra writing and reading practice. The language course is led as always by Helen (Khayele) Beer of UCL with her popular team of Sonya Pinkusowitz (Brussels), Heather Valencia (Stirling) and Lily Kahn (UCL) and with Barry Davis presenting films. The song school is headed by Shura Lipovsky with the welcome return of Joanne Borts, Yiddish theatre star from New York and the ever popular and amazing singer and accompanist Polina Shepherd. For klezmer music and dance the KlezFest Caravan is running courses in the World Music Summer School at SOAS from 5.00pm to 9.00pm in the week of 4 - 8 July details and booking at www.soas.ac.uk/music For more information email [email protected] or speak to Yvonne Glass on Tel 020 8909 2445 ______________________________________________________________________ Please do not use the "reply" key when writing to Mendele.
