On May 22nd the notorious Hebrew and protzentnik (moneylender) of Venice, heads to Brooklyn, where with the help of New Yiddish Rep, The Congress for Jewish Culture, The Yiddish National Theater (not to be confused with The National Yiddish Theater-Folksbiene), CYCO, and his host Temple Beth Emmeth, he will enact his version of the famous story associated with his person. Present to abet him in this undertaking will be an all star cast of Yiddish actors. The public is invited to witness this moving courtroom spectacle. The proceedings will take place in Yiddish and won't exceed an hour and fifteen minutes. Supertitles in English will be provided. Seats in court are limited, so reservations are recommended. Shylock. Next to Moses, arguably the best known Jewish character in World literature. In the 400 odd years since his creation he has worn many faces. But 110 years ago at a lower east side theater he looked a lot like Jacob Adler, and he spoke Yiddish. The iconoclastic ~Seagle~T of the Yiddish stage threw out the romantic sub-plot, keeping only enough of it to justify the story line, and placed his enormous presence front and center as Shylock. We will be presenting his cut of the play using, for the most part, the wonderful translation by Yiddish poet Joseph Bovshover. Adler's production was impressive enough to result, several years later, in a Broadway production with Adler speaking Shylock in Yiddish while the rest of the cast, all Shakesperean actors of the time, spoke English. It remains one of the Yiddish stages legendary Shakesperean adaptations.
