________________________________ Mendele Personal Notices and Announcements
September 1, 2013 To minimize wear and tear on the untershames, three requests: 1. Send time-sensitive notices well in advance. 2. Send material as plain text to [email protected] as plain text (no HTML, other coding, or attachments and write MENDELE PERSONALS in the subject line. 3. Correspond directly with the person who or organization which has posted the notice, *not* with your ever-beleaguered untershames. ______________________________________________________________ From: [email protected] Dear readers, My name is Esther Keitelman Achenbaum and my father was Yecheskel Keitelman a yiddish writer born in Mielec, Poland. We lived in New York and perhaps some of you have heard of him. He also worked for the Forward. He past away in 1969 and left his 3 published books in my possession. Yiddish was our “Mameh Lushen” at home and we were bathed in Yiddish from morning to night. My father would spend hours behind his Yiddish typewriter absorbed in his stories and memories – unfortunately nightmares of the past of his wanderings during the war in Siberia, Tashkent, the loss of loved ones, and his encounters. These books are the only things that I can pass on to my children and grandchildren as their heritage. I’ve spent several years learning to read Yiddish, and have tried in vain to translate some of his stories. The books are short stories. Unfortunately, I am not a translator and have not succeeded in doing them justice. My grandchildren have asked me time and again “What did he write about? “ I know there is a list of translators, but I don’t know whom to contact and I would so much love to transmit this heritage to my grandchildren. I would appreciate any advice as to who to contact, or if there is someone who would be willing to translate one or two stories – of course I would pay. I live in France and the translations could be in English or French. I thank you in advance for any advice or help you can provide.
