attempt before i surrender.
there is a standalone code (gps2.c) given at
http://wiki.maemo.org/N900_GPS_Reverse_Engineering
 "which show GPS data from phonet modem stack"
besides the standard includes, it only references
#include <linux/phonet.h>

even when compiled on nemo, it runs fine under maemo.
would you expect this to run under nemo? or maybe need trivial tweaks? or
is the phone stack on  nemo not complete enough?
on nemo,  the initial socket call fails the assertion,
    sck = socket(AF_PHONET, SOCK_DGRAM, 0);
    assert(sck >= 0);
