Merb's concept of testing of requests is "test the whole stack". It does not matter how isolated your tests are, as long as they do what they supposed to do: reveal problems as you do changes to the code. I personally only test models and libraries heavily, and cucumber with webrat to back me when it comes to changes in controllers and views. So my answer to this question is probably "you don't test that granular, it gives you no benefits to bother".
