Because Merb wasn't developed at your day job?  And because Pathname
is just a crutch built on String and some other classes, using it
would obscure those classes, and an unnecessary object construction in
the root() method would slow it down for no reason?

RTFC.  Come on.  How long would it have taken you to look at any
likely file in Merb's code and find this out?  Programmers who are
afraid to look at internals and try to figure out how things work will
never progress beyond a 'competent beginner' level.
