Interestingly I'm going through this math as well. My 240D is getting a bit
long in the tooth, I think its due for injectors soon plus a slew of other
little issues, and then theres this 190D for sale near me. Then I find out
within the next 6 weeks my job is relocating and increasing my 80 mile a day
commute to about 90 miles a day, but they gave me a retention bonus and that
190D is looking danged affordable. I figured today that based on the average
28mpg I've been getting with my 240D vs a conservative 40mpg the 190D 2.2l 5spd
would get at $2.50/gal I'll save more than $500 a year and if the price of
diesel rises to $3 it would be nearly $700.
So on the $3500 I'm looking at it'll pay for itself in 5 or 6 years just in
fuel. Never mind the fact that it shouldn't nickle and dime me as bad as my
240D has been...\
Of course this is all considerably better than the 18mpg pickup that sits at
home when my wife rides her bike to work. We'd looked at moving somewhere
closer to where I work but I can't see having to pay for her to commute working
out at all.
