a childrens book in 1966, now shelved in the adult section - says alot in itself:
He said towards the end of his life, "The Diesel engine is already proving itself as a means of breaking fuel monopolies by the impartial use of science and progress. The engine is already successfully fitted to permit fueling with such here unusual materials as castor oil, palm oils, lard, butter, peanut oil and so on." "The use of vegetable oils for engine fuel may seem unimportant today, but in the course of time such oils may become as important as petroleum is now." "In time engine fuels may decide the fate of all nations; that is why the ability to use many different kinds of engine fuels is so very important..." Also on his fuel lists were various animal fats. He spent a considerable amount of time designing special IPs and injectors for all sorts of different fuels so those first engines could use LOCALLY AVAILABLE FUEL SOURCES. The Czarr of Russia decorated him for this as it allowed the burning of Baku oil for electricty generation making Kiev the most electrified city on earth at the time. Interestingly, his first engine was NOT designed for peanut oil (that came from a French firm about 6 years later) but for gasoline. 40:1 compression (never done b4 then)...he thought it would not be efficient until 300:1 or 400:1 compression was reached! SOME early designs even had spark plugs (in addition to 40:1 compression). The first (gasoline) Diesel engine also exploded and almost killed his main assistant, Lucian Vogel. Fascinating book - easy read - suggest to all. Author Charles Morrrow Wilson. I am now moving onto an much larger bio of Diesel. He was a very amazing man. And he was murdered...did not commit suicide. Enjoy the weekend.
