I have found with the autozone pads they are always MUCH thinner new than what new OEM pads would be.

Went to the local Auto Zone and bought front pads for my 240D. Door panel is dated 12/74. So I told the clerk '74 240D, Mercedes Benz Diesel.

I've got a sneaky suspicion a car made that late in 1974 is probably a
1975 model year. Can't you decode that from the VIN, somehow?

New pads are always tight, especially aftermarket ones, but if you're
short 1/4" with the pistons in all the way something is wrong.
