You MUST rotate the camshaft along with the crank.  You are hitting a  
valve -- this is an interference engine.  You can remove the rockers  
if you want to do what you are doing, but the correct way is to keep  
BOTH ends of the chain on the cam sprocket as you rotate the engine  
with the crank pulley (not the PS pump pulley).

You will have the injection pump out of time if you're not careful.  
and the engine will not rotate at all unless the cam is operating the  
valves along with the crank.
