I was just surprised at the idea that anybody could license the balance shafts 
from Porsche after their use of shafts in the 944.
Chrysler's use of the Mitsu  Silent Shaft 2.6 dates back to at least the 1983 
Caravan, if not the 81 or 82 K-cars. The Mopar 2.5 replaced the Mitsu 2.6 in 
Chrysler's lineup some time around 1987.

Wiki claims that:
Mitsubishi Motors pioneered the design in the modern era with its "Silent 
Shaft" 
Astron engines in 1975, with balance shafts located low on the side of the 
engine block and driven by chains from the oil pump, and they subsequently 
licensed the patent to Fiat, Saab and Porsche. Cited source:
