On the other hand 100's or even thousands of vertical tanks that are a
totally closed system unlikely to lose much water is a lot better then
having to waste thousands or even hundreds of thousands of gallons of
water a year in arid regions where fresh water comes from desalination
plants to water a tree plantation that takes up a lot more area and
produces less oil than the tanks. Just a thought on something that does
have to be done one way or another.

The trick is to use what works for you. Does not make much sense to
install 100's of vertical water tanks in arid regions where fresh
water comes from desalination plants, or to plant thousands of
poisonous trees in the suburbs of New York.
I do suggest you start doing something.
