Powdered graphite is the best lubricant for any type of locking mechanism,
provided that it does not have any sensitive electric circuitry  (e.g. car
locks with alarm, ignition, etc.).

Local locksmith advised WD-40 when we were having troubles with the
ignition lock on our Dodge Caravan.  Probably not bad advice; should
do a decent job disolving gunk, and it eventually evaporates almost
entirely, leaving a very light lube behind if anything.
