"Regular" ET school isn't that long. My school (which was aviation
electronics tech) was 28 weeks, and that was considered to be a really long
school. I was a staff officer at ET school and that was shorter in duration
than AT was. [This was Coast Guard but the schools are just about the
same.]
Possible that he will do ET school and then go on to advanced training right
away. But two years is way more than just basic electronic technician
training.
