Ah, the dreaded Clicking W124 Tripmeter. Like Chinese water torture, isn't it? It is fixable without disassembly in my experience. I don't know what Peter's talking about with letting your finger slip off the button. You have to push the button quickly and release it just as the gear slips, i.e. in time with the clicking. I guess the Okie-style fix like Kaleb said is just to press it a whole bunch of times and eventually you'll hit on the right one.
