We all learn that lesson the hard way. BTDT. Smart Dieselvolk on the list will take note and remember, thus saving much frustration when the time comes. Carry big cables, or don't bother. 4 is on the small side, but a good compromise for portability. 0 Ga is good, but awkward to use and move!

Yes we all know how Marshall used to speak of the need for hefty cables in the jump starting of diesels. I offer a recent experience on that subject.

My 83 300SD would not start after being shut off for only 15 minutes while I was in voting. No click, no lights, no nothing. My first thought was I voted wrong. About the only thing unusual was I had parked in a place with the driver's side of the car tilted up. Thinking maybe the battery had shifted and something was not making contact, I satisfied myself that all was right. (It turned out the battery, which was seven years old, had failed internally.) A fellow citizen offered to jump start me. He was equipped with cables, he explained, because he often had to jump start the little SUV he was driving. I noticed his cables were flimsy but he was helpful and I knew that all I needed was to get my MB engine just half turned over and it would fire. We connected the cables and he sped up his engine. I had dash instruments! But that was about all. No movement from the starter. We shut off, banged on the starter, connected, let his engine run five minutes, still no luck. By now I'm thinking it must be the starter at fault. I return with tools, tow chain, wife and her little SUV.. My plan is to pull the MB out of the place I had parked it and try coast starting it. However I will first try to jump start it again with my cables which are 4 gauge. It starts like a shot! I had thought the small cables would have at least given the starter enough juice to groan it over slowly. But it doesn't seem to work that way. In my case the heavy duty cables were necessary to get any action at all. I now carry a set in the car.
