When I was a kid, the stories were that people used a Model T with
skinny little tires to pull cars out of mudholes and ditches. I am
sure the Model Ts used this way were loaded down.

Yeah thats part of my contention too. Hell what about places its
really cold? 4wd is a pretty recent invention after all. The first
real SUVs (Jeeps and Scouts) didn't get real popular until the '70s.

So how did people in the Great Lakes states ever survive without 4wd?
Curt's got a 4x4 Dakota in Maine IIRC, and he drives a 240d to work
in the winter.
