It's because the wheels make the car. Take for example the earlier 126 diesel with those ugly 14" bundts (looked like casters) vs perhaps a later 560SEL with larger wider wheels. Which one looks better? Obvious. And my own car came with the homely 17" base wheels (with lousy Conti tires, to boot) which I changed out to the optional 8X18" & 8.5X18" AMGs which transformed the car.
