While working in Belgium, last December, my rental car was a BMW 318d. It was a very nice car and did everything I needed very well. During my couple weeks of travel, the bimmer averaged 4.9 to 5.2 liters/100km. That is 45 to 47 mpg. Wish I could buy one in the US. But the price would probably scare me off.
