8" is more realistic for UHF. The standard large TV antenna usually was based on 1/2~ (40" give or take per side for the longest elements) log periodic array. Most of the single elements worked well to make a 2m 1/4~ beam. Trim the aluminum tube down to length, drill the 3/8" holes through the old mast, and tap them in place with a sheet metal screw. Add a basic L balun, tune, and we're up and running. I made one of these nearly 20 years ago that measured out around 13.5dBi on an 8ft boom.
