Are you referring to the older Vics as "squares" ('79-'91 are known to Vic
aficionados as "boxes")? The vintages I own are known as "aeros".

My son's '91 Ford Ranger beater (inherited from a friend) died early last
summer. I shopped around for a cheap reliable replacement for him and found
a nice '97 CVLX for $2100 on the local CL. The PO had bought a Prius, and
wanted rid of the CV. I was so pleased with the deal that I looked for one
for myself. I found my '95 for $1450, sold on CL by a guy whose dad had
just passed away.

Neither of these were retired interceptors, rather the civilian version.
Mine is actually the Mercury badged as a Ford (based on model number and
features).

I hit on the CV as a candidate for several reasons:

1. They were the only US car that had consistently good frequency-of-repair
ratings from Consumer Reports for that year range.

2. I had driven one for several years as a company car (that one WAS an
interceptor). I liked the handling, size, reliability, comfort and power.

3. The price/value ratio was better than anything else I could find locally.

4. Like Mercedes, these models were built for many years with only minor
changes. Like Mercedes, they have a reputation for durability. The 4.6
engines can go 200-300K miles. At the time, diesel Benzes were very
high-priced.

I get around 19 mpg around town and 25+ on the highway. It is a very nice
highway cruiser.

What's up with the "Square" Vics? Are they old Interceptors?
