Thanks Jim,
I understand (a little more). The ALDA on this engine has been messed with at some time in the past, the adjuster screw is all messed up. Is there a way for a novice to check the adjustment or is this best left to the mechanic. I will replace filters as well.

Most likely.  These diesels are largely what you could
call 'over-aired', and if you've had a sudden drop in
performance I'd look seriously at the fuel system, and
the ALDA system that routes boost pressure to the sensor
on the IP.  Not the turbo.  That's a gasser thing.
