Gun registry in Canada was a silly waste of money. We have essentially had a ban on handguns forever. The registry was for long guns - 22's, shotguns etc. The creeps on the street are carrying illegal hand guns. The huge money spent on the registry was just another government boondoggle. An attempt to show that the government of the day was "doing something about crime". The police support it of course and the soccor mommies and the folks in places like Toronto who don't see why anyone needs to own a gun. Ask the farmer in Manitoba or Saskatchewan who goes out into the fields to check on his cattle why he takes a gun with him. Truly amazing how times have changed in my lifetime. When I was a younger fellow living out in the rural area folks kept long guns in those bracket doodads in the back windows of pick up trucks - visible to all. Go to the post office to pick up the mail and leave the truck idling in the lot with the guns in the brackets - no one thought anything of it. Either that or stuffed under the seat. That was in the 60's and early 70's. God, if you did that now, a SWAT team would shoot you first and then tell the media they were "forced" to do so because you were seen in public with a gun and they had to take you down before you hurt someone.

Not just "any big American city", thats scary. I'd be interested to see Canadian crime stats since the gun ban really went into force. I've my doubts that banning guns really does anything to reduce crime but I'd like to see some real no spin statistics even if they didn't support my opinion. The problem is I don't think such statistics really exist. -Curt Date: Tue, 14 Jul 2009 16:37:00 -0500 From: "R A Bennell" <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT: Winnipeg To: "Mercedes Discussion List" <[email protected]> Message-ID: <[email protected]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Yeah, we are as bad as the big US cities when it comes to crime. And, of course, we don't get to have guns unless we are hoodlums and have them illegally. Getting worse here daily. Gangs of young hoodlums roam the streets shooting and knifing people for fun. Winnipeg used to be a pretty safe place but it is getting to be a situation where one does not go to certain parts of town anymore. Our justice system does not do much to deter them either. Just take along your "get out of jail free card" and do what you want. Theres sexual assult, screens to protect bus drivers, carjacking, murder, kidnapping, it all sounds very scary. Makes you want to move someplace safe like east LA... ;) -Curt Note: Sarcasm... I'm sure its all media fear mongering but it does make you think, if Canada is supposed to be such a safe place unlike the land of gun toting wackos (of which I'm one) to the south. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
