I guess my gf's dad was FOS, not that such a conclusion would be a surprise.

I flew several 24-hour airborne alert (Chrome Dome) missions over the North pole in B-52s; never heard anything about a B-52 being shot at by anybody up in that area. Quite a different story, though, for B-47s. An RB-47 on a reconnaissance mission/probe along the Northern border of the USSR about 1958 to 1960 was shot down by a Soviet fighter aircraft; 3 or 4 crewmen were killed (the RBs carried a manned intelligence-gathering pod in what would have been the bombay in the bomber models); pilot (Capt McCone) and the co-pilot, I think, were captured, tried and held for several months. Possibly, a coupla other such incidents involving B-47s, but none involving B-52s that I ever heard about, was briefed on, etc. We never got close enough to Soviet border (even over the pole) on Chrome Domes to be concerned about such. We B-52s did, however, dodge plenty of SAMS (Surface to Air Missiles) at 37 kft over Hanoi in Dec 1972 with solid layer of anti-aircraft artillery (AAA) below us at 29 kft. Of 750 B-52 sorties during Linebacker II (18-29 Dec), we lost 15 to SAMs, and several others were damaged.

I had a gf whose dad was a B52 navigator, he mentioned one time that occasionally planes would come back from their north pole expeditions with holes shot in their tails. Grabbed the rooshan's tails a little too hard one supposed.

BTW, Boeings always brought me safely home, even after getting shot at profusely and doing a bunch of stuff for me that the designers didn't originally intend for them to do; 3 different MBs have "dropped" me on the side of the road.

737 is a real workhorse too. Are they still in production? It has to be about the longest production run of passenger aircraft

Thanks, and a special thanks to Boeing; the B-52s, designed by Boeing engineers in the 50s, still have much of that resilience. Plans are to continue using the Hs, built in 61,62, another 30 to 40 years.

If more people understood this history, then I would not get questioned about why I prefer to be in a Boeing aircraft when I have to fly on an airline. The B-17 is a phenomenal aircraft.

It used to be "when I get to fly.." but the nutcases, the gummit and the airlines have taken all the fun out.

All those who designed the B-17 and even the next generation of engineers are all gone or retired. But I know a few folks who work there, and some of the expertise lives on.

We all owe a great debt to those veterans, and to the ones prior and after. As our resident USAF retiree, I say three cheers for WIlton!

Can't remember if this has been seen before or not, so....
